THE DOCTOR WAS worried. The Judoon Commander was no expert on humanoid body language, but even he could tell from his companion’s relentless pacing that he was anxious about the girl.
The Doctor had not wanted to allow her to make this attempt to gain admittance to the apartment by such a dangerous route, but he had been outvoted. Nikki had insisted on going ahead, and the Judoon Commander had agreed that it was the logical thing to do. The Doctor had checked and rechecked the safety line that they had made from bed sheets, and only when he was certain that it would hold had he opened the window and let Nikki out onto the ledge.
There had been no sign of life since the tension in the line had been released as Nikki had tumbled through into the next door apartment and untied the sheets. The Doctor had grabbed an empty glass and held it up to the wall, placing his ear next to it to hear anything that might be going on.
He shook his head in frustration. ‘Nothing,’ he reported.
The Judoon Commander grunted an acknowledgement. ‘She is an effective intruder,’ he commented.
The Doctor turned away from the wall, surprised at the tone in the alien’s voice. Was there a hint of warmth in that statement? Was the Judoon Commander beginning to have some kind of emotional attachment to the young detective?
Perhaps he had misjudged the Judoon race, he pondered. He felt a little embarrassed to admit it, but it was very easy to tar an entire species with the same brush. Bad move, Doctor, he told himself, you should know better. If even clone races like Sontarans could have distinct personalities, then alien races like the Khellian Horde, the Hath and the Judoon were bound to be more varied. After all, the Doctor thought, I’ve met Cybermen with personality and even Daleks with their own minds, why should the Judoon be any different?
The Judoon Commander was looking at a handheld scanner, his eyes narrowing. ‘Increased temperature,’ he announced tensely.
‘Heat?’
‘Fire!’ concluded the Judoon. And even as he was speaking an alarm began to sound.
‘We have to get her out of there!’ the Doctor yelled.
Without speaking, the Judoon marched across the room and reached out to touch the wall. He gave it a quick tap and then returned to his original position and lowered his head.
‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’ gasped the Doctor, but the Judoon Commander was entirely serious.
‘Stand clear,’ suggested the Judoon Commander and then, with a sudden burst of speed, he charged across the room, leading with the larger horn on his head. He crashed into and through the wall, sending plaster and brick fragments in every direction.
Immediately, thick black smoke poured into the room through the hole that the alien had just created. The Judoon pulled his head out and took a second run at the wall. This time he was able to enlarge the hole, and he plunged his entire body through the room into the smoke and flames beyond.
