THE END

The Doctor veers towards the wide-open mouth of a shaft. It’s the main exhaust vent for the research complex, where all the toxic gases are expelled into space.

Still holding the deep breath he took before jumping from the shuttle, the Doctor dives straight into the shaft. Down, down he drops …

He allows his body to reach a state of almost pure suspended animation to conserve what little oxygen remains. He can survive for longer than a human without breathing, but not indefinitely.

He disappears into the shadows, a tiny speck of light growing gradually dimmer.

He is aware of falling, as if in a dream. He remembers diving out of a castle window, into a sea full of skulls. His head swims with memories: the Veil, the Confession Dial, the wall of unbreakable Azbantium … the Doctor draws strength from the memory. If he survived all that, then surely he can survive this?

He reaches the bottom of the deep shaft and manages to land without breaking any bones.

He gets stiffly to his feet. There’s no sign of Jiao or the other scientists. Presumably they have drifted off course during the descent. He hopes they manage to survive. He hopes he manages to survive …

Using his sonic screwdriver to open an access door in the base of the shaft, the Doctor enters the research-complex basement.
