In the short term Jamie favoured the age-old philosophy that what can go wrong will go wrong and at the first anxious cry from the Doctor Jamie dropped the chocolate-like bar that the food replicator had produced in response to a request for roast beef and ran toward the console room. The Doctor might need his help.

Elsewhere in the unending corridors of the TARDIS, Zoe Herriot the brilliant astrophysicist from the 21st century also reacted instantly to hearing the Doctor's cry.

Zoe had less experience of travelling with the Doctor than Jamie but had the advantage over the young Highlander in two key areas. First, she had a reasonable level of technological sophistication and was able to appreciate and understand more of the wonders of the Universe that the Doctor and the TARDIS took them to than Jamie. Secondly, although she trusted the Doctor implicitly, she secretly thought that much of the time it was he who needed her assistance rather than the other way round.
