‘She must be strong,’ said Benny. ‘She must have put up a fight even while the killer was draining the blood right out of her.’
‘She’s been very lucky,’ said the Doctor. ‘But she’s not safe yet. They’re arranging a transfusion for her now.’
‘Has she woken up?’
‘Not yet, no.’

Benny considered. ‘We’ll have to keep an eye on her. She’ll be able to identify the murderer. What if he comes after her again, to stop her talking?’
The Doctor shrugged. ‘It’s possible. Right now, I think he’ll have other things on his mind.’
‘Like?’ Benny wasn’t sure she wanted an answer to that.
‘Like finding a replacement for tonight’s victim,’ said the Doctor.
If the masked killer had still been in the tunnels, then Michelle’s terrified scream would certainly have brought him running. Fortunately for the children, he was not. The only people beneath Arandale Keep at that present time were themselves and a man who now introduced himself as Norman. As he spoke to them, Tim’s mind was ticking over like a computer, trying to work out just where he fit into their little adventure.
‘I found the hole in the floor,’ Norman told them, ‘where someone took out the stone block. That was you, was it?’ Gary acknowledged that it was. There was something almost pathetic about this strange man, he thought. What exactly was he after down here?
‘What have you found?’ asked Norman, almost breathlessly. He was straining to look past them, his eyes trying to pierce the gloom of the underground passage.
The children looked uneasily at each other, not sure whether they should be giving away their secrets like this. But one look into Norman’s desperately hungry eyes persuaded Tim that they had to tell him the truth. Slowly, calmly, being sure not to miss anything out, he told of all that had happened since the Kids had entered the tunnels.
By the time he had finished, Norman was more excited than he had ever been in his life.
Much to Ace’s disappointment, it was Mel rather than Karen who opened the door and invited her into the couple’s shared home. Karen had just popped out to the off-licence for some food and drink, he explained, and perhaps Ace would care to join them as there would be plenty to go around.
This is ludicrous, she thought as he ushered her through into the game-filled front room and cleared a chair for her to sit down. Corrigan must have got it wrong. But she knew from experience not to judge too much from appearances, and her hand never strayed far from her concealed blaster weapon, just in case.
‘Game of cards?’ offered Mel.
‘No thanks,’ said Ace, politely. ‘So how are you?’
‘Oh, not so bad. So how about Monopoly then? Or Cluedo?’

‘I’ve had quite enough mysteries for the time being, thank you. And what I mean is, how are you feeling after being beaten senseless yesterday?’
‘Fine, I said.’
‘Not got your glasses fixed yet, I see.’
‘No.’
Ace could see the spectacles resting on a box across the room. ‘I thought you only cracked one lens,’ she observed.
