While there is no question that certain quality sacrifices are made when such a long zoom range is created, these are usually relatively minor and only noticeable at the extreme ends of the range. For example, edge sharpness is often softer with long zoom ranges and there may also be some minor issues with shape distortion. However, considering the extraordinary flexibility of such long zoom ranges, I am willing to live with those flaws. You can almost always compensate for the minor quality lost by using good techniques, such as a steady tripod, careful focusing, and using a low or moderate ISO speed.
