Young Wil read the words clearly and beautifully. When he finished, Chris Beth was too overcome to speak.

“Did you like it?” he asked folding it carefully, and returning it to his pocket.

“I think it’s one of the most beautiful prayers I ever heard,” she said truthfully.

“Did it help? I mean—it always makes me feel better.”

Yes, it made her feel better, Chris Beth told him. But she did not say how. It brought no peace—not the kind she needed. But the prayer Wilson had written added a new dimension to him. Surely, she thought, a man who writes like that to a boy must have more understanding than I’ve allowed. Still, why isn’t he here where he belongs? Why does he pray at a distance?

“The man who brings peace to th’ settlement can’t be no outsider,” Mrs. Malone had said when Joe was weighing his ability to minister here. “He has to be one of us who understands folks’ ways and sets a good example even when Sunday’s finished!”

That was well and good. But wasn’t Wilson one of them, too?
