Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king.

Matthew 2:1

Day 16

Whiter Than Snow

In one of the hymnals on my bookshelf, there’s a section titled “Hymns of Aspiration.” These are songs expressing our desire for a deeper faith, a purer life, and a stronger walk with God. “Whiter Than Snow,” by James Nicholson, is such a hymn. It asks the Lord to work within us to “break down every idol, cast out every foe” so that our lives may be “whiter than snow.” The tune was composed by William Gustavus Fischer, who was born to German immigrants in Baltimore. He began singing in church as a child. As a young man he moved to Philadelphia where he remained the rest of his life, writing and teaching music, and leading choirs and choral societies for the gospel.

Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole;

I want Thee forever to live in my soul.

Break down every idol, cast out every foe;

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, let nothing unholy remain,

Apply Thine own blood and extract ev’ry stain;

To get this blest cleansing, I all things forego—

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, look down from Thy throne in the skies,

And help me to make a complete sacrifice.

I give up myself, and whatever I know,

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow.

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
