These groupings of the data have been chosen in an effort to characterise the relationship of each of the four children in their homes, particularly with their mother, in these transcripts. It is hoped in this way to create an impression of each child as they have developed through their early relationships at home (Chapter 7) and how this enables them to cope with the demands of the new environment that preschool and school offers (Chapter 8).

Clearly, this analysis is not quantitative. This decision has been deliberately taken as it is intended in this small-scale study to capture those features of each child's experience which are not easily amenable to measurement in any obvious way. Because this is so, few traditional research designs can include information concerning the affective qualities of interpersonal behaviour. The groupings of examples of behaviour have not been easy, as human beings do not neatly behave in one way or another. Therefore, there is considerable overlap between the categories, but this framework was found to be useful for the purpose as defined.
