This was no doubt a violation of his privacy, but I couldnât help it.
I stood in the hallway outside the cafeteria, peeking through the window as I watched Ethan sit at a table across from a man who looked more tank than human.
Ethanâs back was to me, his mussy hair standing on end from all the tugging he was doing. Whatever they were talking about must have been an uneasy conversation.
He said he had an older brotherâwas that him? Size aside, they looked nothing alike.
The oversized man shifted in the small chair, his knees hitting the table as he clasped his fists together, pointing his index fingers at Ethan and saying something that caused Ethan to drop his head.
That didnât look good. Whoever he was, his reaction was affecting Ethan meaningfully.
The refrigerator of a man pushed up to stand, the motion sliding the table closer to Ethan. The manâs grimace didnât relax, his finger still pointed at Ethan, but when Ethan stood up, the big guy pulled him in for a hug. Ethan wasn't small by any stretch, but by order of magnitude, it was an impressive difference.
They separated. Ethan ran a hand through his hair, scratching the back of his head. The man held his hand out for Ethan. Ethan shook it, and they both turned to leave.
Catching me looking through the window like a creeper.
âDammit.â I spun around, tugging on my bottom lip and hoping they had somehow missed me.
âHey,â Ethan said, coming out of the cafeteria and bumping my hip with his as he leaned against the window next to me. âLike what you saw there?â
âIdiot,â his beefy compatriot rumbled, following just a few steps behind Ethan. The man gave a brief nod to me and lumbered off, saying nothing else.
Ethan grinned, pointing at his guestâs back. âA poet, that one.â
I watched the giant disappear around the corner before facing Ethan. âWho was that? I thought you werenât expecting anyone.â
âI wasnât,â Ethan said quickly. âAn old friend. He, uh, kind of did me a solid.â Before I could open my mouth to ask, Ethan beamed and held up a book heâd been carrying by his side.
âItâs Not Summer Without You,â I read, bursting into laughter.
His face fell, and I wasnât sure if he was serious or not. âYou donât know the feelings this story stirs up, Rachel.â
He glanced side to side conspiratorially. Confirming no one was paying attention to us, he grinned and spread the book.
Tucked inside, like a perverse bookmark, was a strip of condoms.
Ethan grinned again. âAll the feelings.â
My hands shot to my mouth, and I shook my head, laughing so hard it was silent. Ethan clapped a hand to my back, patting roughly and doing my laughter no favors.
âBad news, though,â Ethan said, once Iâd settled. He pointed in the direction his friend had left. âHe took the replenished stash of Laffy-Taffy with him. Said I didnât deserve it anymore.â
âOh, good lord!â I said, aghast. âSuch cruelty, Ethan. And you call him a friend?â
