Chapter Eighteen

Tory

I freeze with my fist around my familiar apartment doorknob, gazing at the phone in my other hand. This is how they found me…

I’ll leave it.

I don’t know what I was thinking. All I was considering was the flashlight and how handy that’d be. But a comment someone made while I was being visited by co-workers at the medical center let the cat out of the bag.

My phone was what they tracked. Even with a dead battery. Who knew?

But it was my fault Seven was caught. The realization has a ball of dread flaring up in my stomach.

I have to fix this.

I’ve been awake for ten minutes, and it’s almost three in the morning. After splashing water on my face and getting dressed in sweats, I’m ready to go.

It took some convincing to get the medical staff to release me last night. But I pleaded about missing my bed and feeling fine, so they finally released me around nine. Of course, they want me back at ten am for a “debriefing.” And I know what that means.

They’re going to wipe my memories again!

No way. No how. Fuck them.

Thankfully, they never drugged me or anything yesterday. After starting fluids, they had one of my co-workers come in and evaluate me. That part was handy.

I don’t know why they sent Celine. She’s fairly new, so I’m guessing that was just who was available. They probably wanted me comfortable and willing to talk, but I learned more than she did.

I was pleasantly surprised when she came in with my purse. I’d written it off, and the realization that I could live without it shocked me. But Celine said they picked it up by the side of the lake after they “collected” the psychiatric patient, and as far as she knew, he was fine.

Incarcerated but fine.

The therapy center has been swamped and short handed without me. Sucks for them. Because they’re about to be short-handed for a lot longer, if I get my way.

Dropping my phone into the potted plant by the door, I slowly slip out, relieved to see all is quiet. These places are duplexes, and I share an entry with my neighbor.

Clicking off the exterior light by my door, I step out, turning to lock it behind me.

Now that I remember what happened on my last “deployment,” I’m more determined than ever to help Seven. It’s such bullshit because I never went anywhere.

In fact, the whole thing that tipped it off was getting my updated shots right before being deployed. The very last doctor dispensing them morphed into a scaled skin—just like Seven talked about.

I don’t know what was in that shot, but it was pretty much instantaneous. And I wasn’t the only woman it happened to, either.

There were two other women imprisoned with me named Tiffani and Hope, and some other guys who had transporter technology pulled us out of there. Exactly the way Seven described.

One second we were there, and the next we were in the snooty section of base housing.
