Jordan stood in the doorway, door in hand, and watched Chase bound toward his dad’s truck. He whipped open the door, turned, and waved to her. She waved back. Then he hopped inside. Just as the door closed, she heard him boldly declare, “Dad, I’m getting married.”

She almost wished she could hear Mr. Donovan’s, er… Wes’ response.

After the truck pulled onto Ramsey Canyon Road, she closed and locked the door, turned off the lights in the living room, and headed for her room. She hesitated then detoured to Diane’s room, tapped on the door, lightly, not wanting to wake her friend if she’d already fallen asleep.

“Come in.”

Jordan opened the door and poked her head in.

Diane sat up in bed, her back against a pillow, an open book in her hands. She lowered the book to her lap and smiled at Jordan. “Did Chase go home?”

“Yeah, his dad just picked him up.” She pushed farther into the room and went to sit on the edge of the bed.

“Did you two get your issues worked out?”

Jordan nodded. Though his reaction to Mrs. Crandall still nagged her, there wasn’t much she could do except pray it never happened again. If he didn’t know what had caused it, there wasn’t anything else to do. Besides, even if he had only been teasing, the shrink accusation still chafed.

“He asked me to marry him.” Saying the words sent joy through her. She forced herself to ignore the worry and dread that tried to creep in. She wouldn’t allow her personal issues to steel joy over having the love of a man like Chase. Besides, he was God’s man for her. She couldn’t let fear taint that.

“And you said?”

“I said yes.”

“That’s wonderful.” Diane beckoned her closer for a hug. Jordan gladly obliged. “He’s a very sweet young man.”

“Isn’t he though? I feel like I’m walking on clouds.” So some of them resembled early stage thunderheads carrying the threat of a storm. She could ignore that. Nothing and no one would get in the way of her and Chase being happy. Not if she had anything to say about it. “We plan to get married in his family’s church. His pastor requires couples to go through a few weeks of pre-marital counseling before he performs the ceremony, so it’ll be several weeks before we actually get married.”

“That’s good. I wish they’d had pre-marital counseling in my day. Might have made the first few years of my marriage easier.”

“I thought you and Jeremiah were happy.” Jordan frowned.

“Oh, we were, sweetheart, but we had it rough the first few years. Neither of us knew how to adjust to marriage, and our parents weren’t much help. Neither his parents nor mine had what I’d call good marriages. They did little more than co-exist and tolerate each other. We had to learn a lot about marital communication and compromise the hard way. It took a few years to work the kinks out of the system and get it right. We had a wonderful life together.
