THIRTY-ONE

Hart’s Hardware and Feed Store

Wednesday Afternoon

Hours clicked by as Hank sat and waited for Leo Hart to leave his store. Surveillance was harder that it sounded. The idea of just sitting and waiting seemed easy, but the boredom and restlessness creeps in quicker than expected. Bo climbed into the backseat and sprawled out. A few seconds later Hank could hear his light snoring.

“Don’t let me disturb you, Bo. You just rest and I’ll do all the work around here,” Hank said to the dog.

About thirty minutes earlier, Hank watched Leo Hart walk stiff-legged and slightly hunched over from the hardware store to the home store. But he’d not been seen since.

Hank was hungry, so he checked the cracker box. Empty. He checked his coffee cup. Empty. He shifted in the driver’s seat and groaned as pain radiated through his stiff back. After sitting in the Jeep for so many hours, he’d have to walk hunched over like Leo Hart.

It looked like Hart planned to spend all day at his stores, which meant Hank was severely unprepared for running an all day surveillance op. He considered calling Mason to ask him to deliver some food and water. But Hank knew he’d have to explain to Mason why he was doing surveillance on a county commissioner. Bad idea. He didn’t want to have that conversation with Mason. Leaving to grab food was an option, but then he might miss Hart leaving, which would force him to start over tomorrow.

Considering his options, he decided to call the pizza place in downtown Eagle’s Pointe. They’d delivered to his house several times, and he was sure he could get them to deliver a pizza and drinks to his Jeep in the parking lot.

His hunch was right. They didn’t care where he wanted them to deliver the pizza and promised to be there in thirty minutes.
