CHAPTER 8
If youâre trapped inside a travel trailer that is heating up rapidly, panic does not help. Panic, in fact, will probably speed your demise. This is what I told myself as I attempted to stay â metaphorically rather than literally, because literally was out of the question â cool.
Except that Iâd been trapped inside by a murderess, the knowledge of which made panic a little harder to avoid.
I kept thinking about all those public-service ads about not leaving your pets inside a car because a car can heat up in minutes and cause irreversible brain damage. And then Iâd imagine God, turning the celestial oven dial to broil.
Was I hallucinating? Wasnât hallucinating a sign of impending heatstroke? Of said irreversible brain damage, in fact?
I covered my head with my hands, hoping to ward off the effects of the heat. Then I thought, This ostrich-like behavior is getting me nowhere fast.
I scanned the room, thinking that somewhere Iâd find something that would save me. And yes! There was a small brown refrigerator in the room. I staggered toward it, opened its little insulated door, and yes! A solid block of cold air hit me in the face. I started removing the contents and the single shelf. Then I stuck my head inside.
Ah!
So I wasnât going to fry after all.
In fact, the open fridge seemed to be cooling the small space â I mean the room, or whatever you call the interior of a travel trailer â as a whole. So when Tiny came back, Iâd have the energy to jump her. Jump her, and turn her over to the sheriff.
I could see Jeetâs headline now: WIFE OF EDITOR CAPTURES KILLER. Or maybe ALLEGED KILLER. Until after the trial.
So there I was, basking in this imagined triumph, when the little light in the fridge went out and the whole thing stopped making noise.
What?
Had I blown a fuse?
I looked around, but didnât see anything resembling a fuse box. I tried the VCR, and it, too, was dead. So there wasnât any electricity, for sure.
Except that there had to be a way of turning the power back on, because without it, I was going to fry.
I searched all available wall surfaces and all along the floor, too. Nada. Then I saw it, sort of smirking up at me from the kitchen counter: an overdue notice from the electric company. I read the disconnect date.
Today.
So even if the air conditioning hadnât crapped out, Iâd have been out of luck. The question was, though, did Tiny know? Was she deliberately trying to kill me, too?
Because the trailer was heating up again, and faster than Iâd have believed. But of course, at this time of day, it had to be nearly a hundred degrees outside.
This time of day! I looked at my watch. Although the recent cold air had fogged the lens, I could still read the time: 3:15.
Oh, no. That meant Iâd missed the time I was supposed to feed. Which also meant that if I survived Tiny, Booger would kill me.
