They were dressed and had their makeup done early. Then there was a lot of waiting around in the seats, while Bettina and Lee organised the sound and lighting crew. Esther rubbed her hands together, both to warm them and because she was excited. Nervous energy kept her from standing still.

“How cute is this?” Esther asked, looking around at the upper stalls, which were decorated to look like an old-fashioned theatre. A stage was surrounded with chairs on three sides.

“Only eighty seats. And we'll be lucky to fill those,” Bettina snapped, walking past, dialling a number on her phone.

“Haven't you been here before?” Cara asked. “They have comedy shows on here sometimes.” She lowered her voice and jerked her head at Bettina’s retreating back. “She'll only get worse as it leads up to opening night.”

“Is she always like this?”

“Pretty much. I've made prompts for you in case you forget your lines,” Cara said. “Otherwise, I’m just going to sit here and read my book, unless anyone needs me.”

“Thank you,” she said, opening up the script to read over it again. “What are you reading?”

“The Wildlife of Somerset Through Time. Non-fiction, although it could almost be a romance novel title,” she laughed.

“Do you read romance?”

“I read everything,” Cara said. “I’m so lucky to work in a library. Historical. Manga. Memoirs. Science fiction. Historical romance. Some of the romance novels I’ve read have the greatest insight into human nature and relationships.”

“That’s so true. They get such a bad wrap, though.”

Cara nodded. “They do.”

Esther was able to meet Clark outside while they were waiting. He watched her intently as she came around the corner.

“Where are you at with the investigation?” she asked, because his intense stare made her feel like she’d forgotten to put on clothes.

“I’ve been fighting to get a coroner’s report,” he said. “Because Castle had high blood pressure, it’s difficult to get anyone to suspect anything other than natural causes.”

“Right.”

“We should get the results soon.”

“There is no one here who really hated acting with him, but he sounds like an unpleasant sort, generally. Not many people liked him, that's for sure. He seems to have annoyed people in many different ways.”

“Yes, you’re right.” He frowned. “But we have to find the reason big enough for murder.” He leaned back against the oak tree. “We’re a bit stuck with the case at the moment. But I have been working on finding this Chase Russell to help Mick out. Remember how I said I’d let you know about the register at Dot’s? Well, it showed that Chase Russell had booked accommodation from the start to the end of January, but he completely disappeared last week. That’s two weeks early. It was a twin room. After she rang Mick, the guy threatened her.”

“So she didn’t want to tell us about it.” Esther thought back to Dot, with her rockstar style, and something tugged at her subconscious. “The wheels,” she said, slowly. “Dot couldn’t be the mysterious ‘Rock ‘n Roll 68’ from your dream email, could she?”

“I don’t know, Esther.
