CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

I

think Bells almost passed out when I revealed myself.

They all started talking at once. Hunter carefully placed the pan and spoon down before he fell heavily into a chair, swiping his brow.

“I thought you were a ghost!”

“That was most impressive, Princess,” Bells murmured softly.

“Do me!” Binks begged. “Do me! Do me! Do me!”

“Binky!” Cynthie chastised.

“It’s okay, Cynthie, I need to know if I can do this. I’d rather test it on a volunteer first.”

I concentrated on Binks, projecting a similar thought to what I had used for myself but I modified it so I could hear him still. I was worried what would happen if he disappeared and I couldn’t hear him to turn him back. To that matter, maybe I should make it so I could still see him.

I started to have second thoughts about the wisdom of making others invisible without thinking it through and planning better.

“Did she do it?” Binks spun around, checking for the others reactions. When he saw by their faces they could still see him, his wings slowed. “It didn’t work?”

“I haven’t tried it yet,” I sighed. “I need to be careful. I don’t want to risk losing you or doing something I can’t change back. I need to think this through first.”

Binks went to protest but Hunter cut him off.

“The Princess has a point,” He got up to take the breakfast back to the fire. “This is powerful magic that she is only beginning to understand. Best she thinks on it while we eat.”

“But -” Binks started to say.

“Binky,” Cynthie flew over to lay a hand on his shoulder. “Think about it. What happens if she can’t turn you back? To us? To our baby?”

His wings turned a light purple as he looked to her hand cradling her rounding belly.

“Yea, maybe we should hold on a second,” He sighed as he started to fly towards the fire. “Let’s see what the big guy cooked up.”

I followed everyone to the fire and was surprised by the spread Hunter had cooked up. He used strips of meat he had saved before, along with breads and dried fruits to make us a light breakfast. He soaked the bread in the HoneyHarp Nectar and fried it up in the pan along with the meat.

“Well, flip my fluff, the lugger is full of surprises,” Binks quipped as he and the Sprites dug into the fruit and pieces of bread and meat that Hunter had broken into smaller pieces for them.

“This is great,” I nodded my thanks as I bit into the bread.

Hunter relaxed a little when he saw that we were pleased with the meal. I hadn’t realized he was nervous until I saw the tension leave his shoulders.

I leaned back as I swiped my mouth on my sleeve. We all made quick work of the meal but I had spent it thinking about the glamour. If I’m powerful enough to make myself disappear, I needed to be careful. I was playing with things I didn’t understand or have control of.
