After an hour’s work, Meris rapped on the arch leading into the Minster’s office. Shamarr Kiel sat at Minster Wind’s desk, again leaning heavily on an elbow. The office aide sat on a bench and studied her handheld.
Meris stepped inside. “I found it,” she said. “The drug susceptibility.”
The Shamarr looked up. The circles under his eyes looked darker than she remembered. “I had no doubt that you would, Meris.”
It felt good to hear those words. She stepped closer. “Everyone who traveled on that shuttle—and anyone who had contact with Jorah pre-landing—needs to be treated. Everyone, even if Tavkel apparently healed him…them.”
She still couldn’t believe Chancellor Gambrel had plotted genocide against Sentinels. The others must be cared for, but there had to be a better explanation than Jorah’s.
So she had to get Jorah alone. In her lab, she’d realized that he and Chancellor Gambrel must have come up with some kind of plan—together—something Shamarr Kiel and the rest of these people wouldn’t be privy to. Hence the private message roll, telling Meris to go along with Jorah’s claims.
The Shamarr glanced down at his command board. “It would be simplest if you would transmit whatever information is crucial straight to the cruiser’s captain.”
That was what she’d hoped. “Immediately.”
“They’ve ignored all my hails, though. And you’ll have to explain why you diagnosed a disease before anyone showed symptoms.”
She smirked. “I’ve actually thought that through. The Chancellor and his real followers will be delighted to know that lives have been spared. But if some minor officer up there really is hostile to you people—afraid of you—” and she still had some sympathy for that viewpoint— “well, I don’t object to telling a lie based on truth. I am in training, so I can honestly say I was practicing routine health checks and stumbled upon the infection.”
He pursed his lips. More lines appeared across his forehead. “I assume you’ll also ask to be evacuated to Tallis.” Before she could speak, he added, “You’ll do so with my blessing, Meris. I want to know when those Federates intend to depart, as a matter of fact.”
“The thought had occurred to me.” She didn’t mention that she’d been told to cooperate with Jorah. Chancellor Gambrel might need her to remain here a little longer. Still, Shamarr Kiel had probably seen that she was attracted to his nephew. He’d probably be glad to get rid of her now, and save Jorah from her.
Well, that was none of the Shamarr’s business.
He waved her to a stool near the end of the desk. She sat down. Spotting a desktop transceiver set up to record text, she reached for the touchboard.
“Attention,” she keyed, “Federate cruiser orbiting Procyel II. This is Meris Cariole, daughter of Senator Brisbane Cariole and Doctor Clementia Moor, both of Elysia. I am an Elysian citizen, a member of the Collegium of Human Learning, and a medical student at Elysia General, student ID 608367, temporarily housed on Procyel II, having arrived aboard the damaged shuttle Daystar.
