“What do you know about Ben?”

“I’m sorry?”

“I’m not speaking Greek, Rose.”

I looked at Maggie through the reflection of my mirror. She was leaning against the doorframe of my room. “What do I know about Ben?”

“That’s what I asked.”

I was in the process of getting ready for my date. My date with my boyfriend, the super villain, where he was going to take me to dinner and a play. Which, oddly, was exactly how I always imagined a date with a super villain would go.

“I know everything.” That was a stupid thing to say.

“That’s a stupid thing to say,” Maggie replied.

“I know.” I sighed.

“If you knew everything, you would have known that he was Manifold.”

“I know.”

“So, clearly, you don’t know everything.”

“I know.”

“So what do you know?”

I shrugged and finished putting in my earrings. “I don’t know. Stuff.”

“Stuff?”

“Like, all the stuff you’re supposed to know, I guess.”

“Which is?”

“He’s an only child,” I said. “I know that he hates spiders. I know that his favorite color is blue. I know that he’s never seen Star Wars and somehow now he’s determined to never see it. I don’t know what that’s about. Maybe it’s just some kind of weird counterculture thing he’s going through. But he seems pretty determined. I know that he reads an insane amount. Something like a book or two a week. I think he speed reads. I’m not totally certain, though. I haven’t asked him. Mostly because it seems kind of like a stupid thing to ask. But I guess I could ask. I know that he’s a lot smarter than me. I know that his dream is to open a bookstore in a small town and spend his days just reading and recommending new reads to all of his customers. But I also know that he knows that’s not exactly a realistic goal. So I know he’s focusing on getting a degree in chemistry and I know that, if the internship goes well, he’ll probably end up working for Global Mission. Which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to happen.”

I stopped and took a breath.

“How’s that?” I asked. “Is that what you were looking for? Actually, what are you looking for?”

Maggie didn’t respond. Instead she turned around and stepped back into the kitchen, indicating that I should follow.

On the table she had a bunch of papers and pictures spread out.

“Okay, this looks a little weird,” I said.

“Did you know that both of Ben’s parents are dead?” Maggie asked.

“Yeah, I think so.”

“You think so?”

“Yes. I know. Obviously I know. What kind of horrible girlfriend would I be if I didn’t know that his parents were dead? I just, it’s a weird thing to talk about.”

“Not usually.”

“Well, with Ben it is,” I said. “And I don’t blame him, honestly.”

“Did he ever talk about how his parents died?”

“Yeah, because it’s such an uncomfortable topic for him I definitely asked him about how his parents died.”

“I’m going to take that as a no, then.” Maggie searched through the papers.

“I’m confused. The other day your big tip was about how awkward my next date was going to be,” I said.
