Chapter 17

Patrick

That was a moment I could never have imagined happening in my life. I stood by Declan’s bed and held his tiny hand, trying to ignore the IV already in it. It made my heart ache to think about how many times he’d gone through a needle being inserted into the little veins and how familiar it all was to him. He shouldn’t have to go through any of that. No child should be that accustomed to the feeling of a needle or the sounds of a hospital. He should have been spending his days running around in the yard and kicking a ball, or finger painting and building with his blocks. Yancy should have been worried about kissing away skinned knees and getting grass stains out of his clothes, not learning to care for incisions and wondering how long it would be until he could get out of hospital gowns and pajamas and just be a little boy again.

“Well, my sweet boy, I can’t say this is how I would have liked to get to know you, but nothing will ever make me regret having you in my life. It may have only been a few days that I’ve known about you, but it already feels like you have been in heart from the day you came to be. I want you to know how much I love you and that I would do this again and again for you. There is nothing they could ask of me that I wouldn’t do to protect you and give you the very best chance of a healthy life I can. Now, all you need to do is rest and get better. As soon as you are well, we are going to have the most fun together. There is so much I want to show you and teach you.”

I leaned down and kissed his forehead. When I’d agreed to come to Birmingham with Yancy, I didn’t know things were this serious or that in a matter of days I would be on the brink of major surgery that would change me forever. It seemed almost insignificant now. The surgery was only a small moment in the bigger picture of the way Yancy and Declan had changed me. I was irretrievably different than I was in the moments before Yancy showed back up at the door to the pub, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Now that I knew my son existed, I would never choose to go back to the life I had before. Even with the pain and fear we were going through now.

The doctors didn’t tell me how long it would be until the surgery started. Dr. Morris had gone to see to the preparation of the surgical suite and our recovery plan. Yancy was talking with her parents and rescheduling her life around this sudden drastic change. It all meant I got some time just with Declan. This wasn’t my idea for one of the first things my son and I did together, but that didn’t change that it was something we shared.
