If anyone had told me a month or so ago that I’d be lying in bed with a much younger man and his brother asleep between us I would have told them they were nuts. Yet, there I was doing exactly that. Wei’re had finally fallen asleep, stretched out in our bed, his small face stained with tears, one of his hands still clutched tightly to mine.

Li Qiang, left eye turning a scary shade of purple and wearing his penguin pajamas—how had he found them amid the confusion?—watched me as I gently pulled my hand from his brother’s grip. “I thought he was getting better,” he said, planting a brief kiss on Li Wei’s forehead. “He must have had a dream or something. We weren’t making that much noise.” He lifted his eyes to mine. “Were we?”

Heat rose to my cheeks. Oh God! Let’s not talk about it. I shook my head. “No, I don’t think so.” In my mind, I revisited the scene, looking for maybe an accidental bump into the dresser or dropping a knickknack on the floor. It just didn’t happen. Then again, all I could remember were Li Qiang’s lips and tongue on me. I diverted. “What caused the panic attack?”

With a sigh, Li Qiang draped a blanket over his brother. “Wei’re suffers from PTSD.” I tilted my head to the side. “It’s a long story.”

Oh no, he wasn’t going to get away that easy. “I would love to hear it.” I thought he flinched a little. That was a first. Li Qiang was not as immune to stress as he looked, after all. “Please.”

He threw a glance at his brother before settling against the pillow. “A couple years ago, I took him on a road trip to Disney. We had a great time, but on the way back we got caught in a storm. It came at us out of nowhere.” He raked his fingers through his hair and licked his lips. My eyes followed his other hand as he unconsciously sought out his little brother’s. “There was debris flying all around us, hitting the car left and right. Wei’re was terrified.” He paused, his eyes lost in space. “Fuck, I was terrified. When the post of a wooden fence broke through the windshield it nearly impaled my brother.” A shiver shook the lovely man beside me. “I took my eyes from the road and lost control of the car. We rolled so many times, I lost count. I was only aware of my head hitting against the window over and over again and the hysterical screams of my brother.”

I reached out for him, covering his and Li Wei’s hand with mine. Guilt filled me; why had I brought up such a difficult memory? Despite his obvious pain, Li Qiang continued, “The next thing I knew, I was coming to, still attached to my seat by the seat belt but upside down, warm blood dripping over my eyes. Wei’re was awake, shaking uncontrollably.” His quiet voice shook.
