Mackenzie was inexplicably exhausted by the time they reached his father’s estate—more of a compound, really. She let Jacob take her bags as she followed him past the main house to the winding paths beyond.

“Where is everyone?” she asked as they headed across the seemingly endless expanse of tree-studded, impossibly green property.

“Getting ready for dinner, most likely,” he said. “We’re probably the last to arrive.”

Jacob pointed in various directions as they walked. “The pool is that way.” “There’s a greenhouse down that path.” “The sauna and steam room are over there by the gym.”

Mackenzie just followed along. She should be mocking him for the excess—because, really, this place was straight off the set of Dynasty. But the wind had gone out of her proverbial sails back in the car and she just needed some time alone to get her head on straight.

But alone time was definitely not in the cards. They passed a number of cottages before Jacob stopped in front of one, opening the door and gesturing for her to enter. The little bungalow was tastefully decorated but far from cozy.

It was also small. Very small.

It didn’t take more than a quick scan to see that it was a one-bedroom cottage. With one bed. She turned to face Jacob who was hauling both their bags through the doorway.

“And where exactly will you be sleeping?” Arms crossed, she fixed him with her deadliest glare.

He took one look at her face and laughed. “Relax, Attila the Hun, the couch folds out. That’s why I picked this one.”

Some of the tension seeped out of her shoulders and she shoved away the nagging feeling of disappointment. She didn’t want to sleep with him—talk about a massive mistake—but the fact that he so didn’t want to sleep with her that he’d planned ahead was a tiny blow to her pride.

For what felt like the millionth time that day she told herself she was being overly sensitive, but she couldn’t seem to help it. Their conversation in the car had gotten under her skin. It had brought back memories, but worse, it had made her take a different look at her current situation. In particular, her love life….or lack thereof.

She hadn’t dated in high school. Not at all. But that was hardly her fault. She’d been the outcast at that school, thanks to Jacob and his friends. A nagging voice told her she was exaggerating. Okay, fine, so she hadn’t exactly helped matters. But being torn away from her friends at her public school and kicked out of her house and away from her mom—it hadn’t been an easy transition. And while it was possible that her bad attitude at East Harbor didn’t exactly help her make friends and influence people, she hadn’t been the only one to blame.

Jenna hadn’t been nice to her—although they’d worked through all that ages ago. The whole sudden marriage, a new stepmom and stepsister on the scene, competing for her dad’s attention—well, she’d handled it all about as well as any spoiled brat of a teenager could.
