Chapter Fourteen

RACHEL SHUDDERED AND stepped back. Justiz and Leonardo circled, two heavyweights in a ring of verdure. Justiz's convulsions thickened, edged to the brink of change.

Leonardo’s roar echoed across the valley. A cottage cheese foam trimmed his mouth and trailed a crooked path to his chin.

She eased forward, the love within drawing her to him.

Justiz turned his head, eye fierce. "Get back now." He swept back, muscles bulging. The changes were already erupting within. She’d seen it before and knew he would shift into a tiger with all the force of a volcano in seconds. Rachel jumped back, landing hard on a single knee. She gasped as the joint protested, the pain dripping down her leg and shooting up to her waist.

Leonardo’s anger detonated with ear-splitting ferocity and one large foot narrowed the gap between the two men. The barrage converged into a continuous snarl, his hands batting at the dead space between them.

Justiz responded with a burst of flesh and fur, his clothes scattered at his feet. The colossal Siberian's shoulders passed Rachel's waist by several inches. Flicking his tail, he took a step, shoulder blades gliding in smooth motion. Grass bowed beneath one giant paw, and then the other as the two drew in on each other.

"No!" Her voice trumpeted, though neither heard her, or if they did, they didn’t respond. She inched forward, fell back again, unsure how to stop them.

Leonardo snarled, swiped. Justiz the tiger rose onto hind legs as mighty front paws jabbed at Leonardo’s chest, splicing the fine fur and skin beneath into scarlet, oozing welts. Another met square across his face, jarring Leonardo's head to one side, chin scraping a shoulder.

Leonardo hollered, reached out, and lifted Justiz up by his head. His paws flailed and swiped, scratching at Leonardo’s arms, legs, and torso. Leonardo launched the feline high in the air. Justiz landed on all four paws, shook his head, and bellowed. He leapt at Leonardo as he rushed forward.

"Stop it!" Rachel screamed.

Justiz reared, a paw knocking Leonardo backward, his body skidding across the ground. The tiger stepped toward him with the leonine flat on his back. Justiz snarled. Leonardo's legs pushed hard against the earth, propelled his body upright.

Leonardo hunched and charged, hit Justiz hard and threw him off-balance. Arms wrapped tight around his body. Leonardo held his head back from Justiz's snapping jaws as his arms squeezed around Justiz's torso.

Justiz roared as the grip tightened.

And something inside of Rachel snapped. With tight fists, a heat rose from the base of her spine into her head. She raced to Leonardo’s side and yanked on an arm. "Let him go! Please. Let him go!"

His elbow swung outward, slammed into her collarbone, the same side she broke in the car accident. Rachel lost her footing and fell back. She grimaced, rubbed the surgical scar, and pushed to her feet. She latched onto his arm as a sickening crack sounded from Justiz's midsection.

The tiger yelped and snarled, and she was certain a rib or two was broken.
