Chapter twenty

Nathan

They worked and played themselves and each other to exhaustion. Once they collapsed, they slept soundly, Nathan more so than he had in years. There were no nightmares, no waking up in the middle of the night to stare at the ceiling for hours without hope of the mercy of a worriless sleep.

He woke first, turning to look at the slumbering angel at his side. Her blonde hair was delightfully tussled, her face just a little pink and swollen. But she slept with a smile, perfectly at ease, at peace, at rest.

Nathan could feel that she was having that same effect on him, making a simple smile easier to manage, making it feel perfectly natural for the first time in a long time. And just looking at her brought that smile to his face, effortless, glorious, like the young woman herself.

Her big, blue eyes fluttered and she woke, slowly refocusing on him and on her surroundings. Her smile stretched even wider.

“Morning,” she said.

“Good morning,” Nathan answered. “Sleep well?”

“Better than ever.”

Nathan took a deep breath of the briny breeze, refreshing in his lungs. “Yeah, the sea air, it’s nice.”

“It is,” Harlow said, “but I’m not talking about the sea air.”

He knew it, but something in Nathan wanted to hear it, needed to hear it. And he did hear it, loud and clear.

“Ready to get up, greet the day?”

Harlow stretched her arms out. “I’m not sure I can. I may have to spend all day just … lying around in your bed.”

“Is that so?”

Harlow nodded playfully.

“Suppose I see you here, looking so sweet and sexy, and decide I can’t resist holding you, having you, breaking you apart and putting you back together again?”

Harlow shrugged. “Not that you haven’t already. I do need a little R’n’R.”

“Rest and relaxation,” Nathan said, “understood.”

“No, recovery and recouperation.” A hearty laughter broke out between them. “Really, though, that was … that was something, last night.”

“It really was,” Nathan said. “Incredible, unforgettable.”

Harlow smiled again, sheepishly pulling the sheets further up over her naked breasts. “Anyway, I … I don’t want to forget it. And I don’t wanna just remember it.”

Nathan knew what she meant, what she was trying to say.

Nathan reached out and touched her cheek, so delicate and smooth beneath his fingers. “It wasn’t just a one-night stand, at least as far I’m concerned. But I’m not going to pretend I own you or anything like that. You’re free to go wherever you want and do whatever you want, with whomever you please, and with my blessing.”

She put her hand on his. “It doesn’t matter where I go, and I don’t really want very much. But do I still have your blessing if … if you’re the person I want to go there with, do those things with?”

Nathan smiled, and they kissed again, a robust salute to their new love, a commitment to seeing it through, and to moving ahead.

Looking forward and leaving the past behind.

“Not that I’m … ungrateful,” Harlow said. “I don’t want you to think you owe me anything.
