Chapter Nine
At eight that night, after Beulah had left from another not entirely unpleasant visitâespecially seeing how sheâd brought more pickles and a homemade carrot cakeâTravis had just shut down his computer, then rammed a frozen lasagna in the oven when a knock sounded on the front door.
Libby sat in her high chair awaiting her dinnerânot very patiently, judging by the fitful cries coming from her pouty lips.
âHold your horses,â he said, closing the oven before heading for the front door. âBe with you in just a sec.â
Not that heâd become an expert or anything, but he was almost getting the hang of the whole domesticity thing, although it would be considerably easier once the new appliances heâd ordered came in.
Thank god the local Searsâa catalogue-only affairâseemed to have never heard of Beulah, meaning theyâd been all too happy to accept his check for the new appliances the store had promised to deliver and install by the end of next week.
Kit and his other coworkersânot to mention his friends and business associates he kept in touch with back homeâhad pointed out that he was spending an awful lot of money on the old place, seeing how heâd only be around until after the judge declared the will rock-solid. But the way he saw it, the old place needed sprucing up. Since there wasnât anything better to doâother than dwell on Kitâs pending nuptialsâit was at least a mentally healthy way to pass time. Not only thatâwhat better tribute to his sister than to finish the restoration job sheâd so lovingly started?
âHi,â Kit said when he opened the door. Sheâd changed from her navy work slacks and yellow blouse into hip-hugging jeans and a sleeveless halter that showed way more skin than state regulations should allow when it came to preschool-teacher apparel. In her hands she held a foil-covered glass casserole dish.
Waaaaaaggggggghhhhh!
âIf this is a bad time,â she said, âIâll be happy toââ
âCome on in,â he said, giving himself a mental thump for being so ridiculously happy to see herâand not just because what she carried smelled warm and cheesy. Whenever he was around her, he felt almost normal again. Like his old selfâwhoever that was. âI was just putting dinner in the oven, but what you have smells better.â
âIf you already have a meal planned,â she said, âyou can freeze this for another time.â
Waaaaaaaaaaaa!
âNo way,â he said, already heading toward the kitchen. âCome on in. In case you couldnât tell, the princess is throwing a bit of a fit.â
âAnything I can help with?â
âYou know girlsâ¦â He cast a grin over his shoulder. âProbably boy trouble.â
âNo doubt.â She set her dish on the empty counter. In anticipation of the kitchen contractors, the whole kitchen was pretty bare. âWhatâs going on in here?â
He told her about his latest plans for the place and how before the new appliances arrived a lot of other items such as floors, countertops and cabinets needed to be replaced.
âDuring construction, whatâre you going to do about food?â she asked, unlatching Libbyâs seat belt to tug her out of the high chair and into her arms.
