One thing to bear in mind when using a polarizing filter is that it changes the appropriate settings for exposure. The filter dims the light going into the lens, which means that you need to use a slightly slower shutter speed or wider aperture than you would normally use for a given shot.

Neutral Density (ND) Filter

A neutral density filter cuts down the light going into the lens at any particular aperture (like what was noted above for a polarizing filter, except with the ND filter that’s the whole point). What the ND filter does is to reduce the intensity of light at all wavelengths equally, so that you still get the same color balance but at a reduced light volume. This allows use of slow shutter speeds or wide apertures that, at normal light intensity for the conditions, would result in overexposure. The reason to do this is, of course, for the effects that slow shutter speeds or wider apertures provide. A photographer might, for instance, want to shoot a photo of a waterfall at a slow shutter speed that results in a blurred, motion-suggesting effect. In outdoor, daylight conditions, using such a slow shutter speed would be overexposing the picture, but by using an ND filter, it’s possible to take that shot without overexposure and get the effect desired. Another example is taking close up shots of flowers in a garden, with the remainder of the picture blurred. This effect is achieved with a wide aperture and consequent low depth of field, but again, a wide aperture might result in overexposure. Using the ND filter prevents that.
