CHAPTER 14

There was no thought. The shield simply formed around me like a snow globe and the electricity from Alaric’s hand swirled around it as if caressing it in a loving embrace. I felt no pain or resistance and I glanced at Daryn wondering if it was him or me.

“Did you do this?” I asked.

Daryn shook his head as the static electricity pulsed once more before disappearing. “No. It may have been the book. I doubt it will allow your destruction, especially while you are holding it.”

Reginald stared at Alaric as if he had grown a second head. “Are you insane? She is the keeper of the book whether you like it or not. Your greed and need for power have blinded you from the truth. Daryn is right. This council is a farce. Our role is to protect the people of this town. Not bicker over petty differences with the hunters. We need them.”

Marlin entered the council chambers with several members of his team. “Boss, you are good to go. We have a second team patrolling outside until the council members can be escorted to safety.”

I almost smiled. Marlin was far more diplomatic than Daryn. He managed to sound like his concern was genuine. When his eyes moved to Amalie, I wondered if it was. “Can we go?” I asked during the awkward silence.

Daryn put his hand on the small of my back and led me from the room. I breathed a sigh of relief as we passed through the glamored wall. The bookstore looked the same but now four hunters were standing at the entrance and nodded to Daryn as we exited the building. The oppression I had felt when we entered seemed gone as well, but I attributed it to the book and its need to protect me.

I was silent as we got in the vehicle and Daryn pulled away from the curb. After it was obvious we were not going to my house, I placed the book on my lap. “Where are we going?”

“To my house. I need a moment away from this craziness to decide our next move. I just saddled myself with the council’s duties and the book. I have to consider the logistics of how that will work. We are spread thin as it is and I can’t leave two teams at the bookstore.”

“I would like to go to your place, anyway. Are Kaine and Indy still at my place?”

“Yes. I don’t want Caleb alone. I will feel better once he has a placement at the base. I think we are going to double up the cadets until this crisis is passed.”

“How?”

“They will stay at the base or at their homes but never alone. Many of the rookies don’t have family so we will pair them with those that do,” he said.

I recalled my childhood and the loneliness I had felt after my parents died. “You are talking about hunters’ children. Ones that lost their parents to the demons.”

Daryn gripped the steering wheel tighter.
