In the early morning hours of December 18, 2004, on Route 130 in Bordentown Township (New Jersey), Sergeant Norman Hand pulled over William Grieb for drunk driving. Hand ordered Grieb to perform a field sobriety test. What happened next, according to Hand, was “the kind of stuff you see on TV but can’t believe would happen here.” Before the allegedly intoxicated Grieb could finish the test, he was run over and killed by an eighteen-wheeler driven by an intoxicated Shane Gildersleeve.
