CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
It wasnât anywhere near as serious as it had looked, even though Alan had been convinced that his nose was disintegrating from the inside out and would eventually drop off completely. Heâd calmed down once the foam had finally stopped oozing and his eyes had stopped watering, but heâd still been mightily pissed off with Scratch for the goolie-grabbing incident. But after Scratchâs profuse and repeated apologies â genuine or not â the tension between them had begun to ease. Then Alan had announced that he was ravenously hungry, so Iâd packed the pair of them off to fetch a takeaway in the hope theyâd have the peace treaty properly signed and sealed by the time they got back.
Now, although I donât know a lot about drugs, Iâve heard that some of them give people the munchies, but I very much doubt that Alanâs sudden craving for food had anything to do with snorting washing powder â which the stuff in the urn almost certainly was. It definitely wasnât coke, so what the fuck had happened to that? Had this Tess woman and her granddad sussed what was in the urn that Sanjeev had given them and kept it for themselves? They were hardly the sort, though, were they? But how could you tell? Granddad had seemed pretty shifty when weâd done the swap, and besides, what about all those stockbrokers and City types who apparently shoved a small fortuneâs worth of coke up their snotlockers every day of the week but didnât usually come across like the walking dead in pinstripes?
Too many questions, and the only way we were likely to get any answers was to pay another little visit to Ms Pemberton and her granddad. The campsite was only about twenty minutes away, but we needed to get moving as soon as Alan and Scratch got back. It wasnât that late in the evening yet, although the old man probably hit the sack early with his Bournvita, and far be it from me to want to interrupt his beauty sleep. And speaking of Alan and Scratch, where the fuck were they?
Toby must have read my mind. âTheyâre taking their time, arenât they? Iâm starving.â
The kid was stretched out on the bed, watching some crap on the TV while I was sitting on the chair by the desk, also staring at the telly screen but taking nothing in.
âTheyâve only been gone an hour,â I said, playing it cool. I didnât want to let on until the last minute that Iâd be leaving him here with Alan while Scratch and I went back to the campsite. Otherwise, heâd be arguing the toss about wanting to come too. âMore than likely theyâve stopped off for a couple of beers.â
Toby grunted and muttered something about lucky bastards at the same moment as my mobile phone started ringing. Who was it this time? Danny or Carla?
I checked the display. Carla. That made it Carla eleven and Danny eight in the last hour alone.
