Macy was lost in the novel she was reading, when the conductor jerked her out of her trance. “Next stop, Jenkintown!” he yelled.

Macy did not notice the passengers boarding the train until she heard a jovial “Morning, Macy!” She looked up to see the smiling face of Ethan Talbot, a new director in her division. “Morning, Ethan,” she returned. To her relief, he kept walking down the aisle to find a seat in the back of the train. Odd. Maybe he missed his usual train or just decided to board onto a different train car today, which would explain why in the weeks he had been employed at Sandlock Corporation she had never seen him on the train until now. Hopefully it would not be a regular encounter.

Ethan seemed likable on the surface, but Macy picked up an underlying energy in Ethan that she did not care for. He would say anything to be agreeable or to get people to like him, and then he would do whatever suited him. In his position as director of marketing, he quickly adopted a survival plan for this corporate environment: Tell people what they wanted to hear. Don’t take responsibility for anything. Self-absorbed and a favorite among the single women in the office, Ethan used his charm and good looks to take full advantage of every situation. Macy was one of the few that were on to him. Bottom line—she did not trust him.

The potent protective shield Macy deployed, when she realized it was he, impressed Ethan. He watched as a cocoon of white light surrounded her and a solid sheet of energy that looked similar to steel shot up between them. Ethan was unable to probe her with his energetic tentacles. He was hoping to pierce the armor Macy kept so skillfully intact throughout the day by taking her by surprise, but was caught off guard himself by her quick response. Victoria had warned him that it would not be easy to keep watch on Macy. His mission would require the use of all of his occult abilities, including his natural gift of mind-reading.

One of the reasons Victoria had recruited Ethan Talbot into her coven was his talent for manipulating others. Strategically placed at Sandlock Corporation, Ethan was able to observe Macy Vincent. He was skilled enough to pick information from Macy’s mind when she was unaware of his presence. Victoria had seen potential in Ethan and took him under her wing, bringing his magical education to a whole new level. She knew rites and techniques that were not in any of the occult books Ethan had come across.

Victoria’s effortless ability to astrally project was one of the prized teachings she afforded him. He had been tempted to check out Victoria as an astral voyeur. She was naturally provocative, and Ethan was incessantly drawn to her oozing sexuality. Ethan found Victoria’s pale skin and long dark hair to be quite stunning. He also found himself to be an exceptionally attractive specimen, making the two of them, in his mind, physically compatible.
