Chapter 12

When Paul reached Belhaven, Gloria asked him to stop by Bea’s Beauty Boutique.

She told him which street to turn on and when they reached Bea’s, Paul pulled in behind her mini cooper.

“I’ll only be a minute.” She sprang from the car and hurried to the back door, which was also the entrance to Bea’s beauty salon.

The pungent aroma of permanent wave solution stung Gloria’s nostrils. She plugged her nose. “Bea. You back there?”

Bea McQueen squeezed her ample frame through the louvered swinging doors, clutching a bottle of perm solution in a gloved hand. “Hi, Gloria. I thought I heard someone. Are you here to make an appointment?”

“No. I probably should. I see that you’re busy, but was thinking of getting my hair done before our girl’s trip to Florida. I know Kelly, my daughter-in-law, stopped by to talk to you about working here part-time.”

“Oh yes.” Bea’s head bobbed up and down. “She’s going to start on Saturday. I think she’ll be a perfect fit. Would you like to make an appointment with her?”

“Yes. I can wait until later if you’re busy.”

“I just finished applying the perm solution to June’s hair. I have time to write you into the appointment book now.”

“Put me down for 9:00 a.m. Saturday, cut and color.”

Bea peeled off her gloves and hurried to the desk. “You’ll be Kelly’s first appointment.”

Gloria followed Bea to the desk. “I have another question, actually it’s a favor.”

Bea jotted Gloria’s appointment in the book and set the pen on the desk. “What’s up?”

“Tomorrow is Don Hansen’s birthday. Margaret is a little down in the dumps and I was trying to think of a way to cheer her up. I was wondering if you could recommend a day spa in Green Springs or Rockville we might be able to get into on short notice. I was thinking maybe a mani or pedi or even a light facial.”

“You know.” Bea shoved her hand on her hip. “I was thinking the other day it was high time to expand operations. I have that empty workshop out back. It’s full of junk. With Belhaven booming and all these new families moving to the area, there will be a strong demand for spa services. I might as well get a jump on it.”

“You read my mind,” Gloria said. “I think a day spa would be a perfect addition to Bea’s Beauty Boutique.”

Bea tapped the tip of her finger on her chin. “I took an introductory course in massage therapy awhile back. I’m a little rusty, but if you and a few of the other gals want to come by tomorrow. Hang on.” She slipped her reading glasses on and consulted her appointment book. “I’m free from noon until two-thirty tomorrow. Why don’t you ladies come by for an in-house trial spa experience?”

“Won’t it be too much for one person to handle?”

“I’ll see if Kelly can join me. I believe she’s a pro at facials. I can handle manis and pedis. We can whip up a few finger foods and Voila! We’ve got a pampered party on our hands.
