When the lights of the truck behind them were so close they disappeared behind the tailgate of his truck, Thad increased his speed again in hopes of lessening the effects of the crash he was sure was inevitable and braced for the impact he knew was coming. The brush guard on the sinister black vehicle caused a deafening screech as metal met metal. The jarring thud caused his seat belt harness to bite into his shoulder. Fortunately his truck was big enough and heavy enough that he was able to retain control. That helped, but wasn’t a guarantee that they wouldn’t end up running off the road or in a serious accident.

“Your driveway is coming up, isn’t it?” Carrie asked, her voice shaky and higher than normal from the fear he knew she was experiencing.

“Yeah, but we’re going too fast to make the turn,” he answered. If they could make it another couple of miles without crashing, the terrain flattened out into a valley between Cougar Mountain and Tranquility Peak. That would lessen the chance of running off into a ravine, or worse yet, running off into the small river that ran parallel to the road. It wasn’t a particularly deep or even wide tributary, but it was swift and could easily carry a vehicle downstream to the waterfall where the river fell to the valley below.

Nodding at his phone in the tray on the center console, he continued to race toward the nearest level stretch of road. “Carrie, call Levi and let him and Blane know what’s going on,” Thad said, pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor. When his truck surged forward, a space between the two vehicles opened up. “Tell him we’re headed down the highway toward the valley between his driveway and mine.” Now, if they could just make it to that point, they’d have a better chance of surviving this insanity.

As Carrie made the call, they reached the valley and the black truck closed the distance between them, once again ramming his tailgate. The violent jolt caused the back of his dually to fishtail, but he managed to maintain control. Looking in his rearview mirror, he groaned when he saw the angle the other driver was taking. Instead of coming at them to hit the tailgate dead center as he’d done before, the jerk was going to ram them on the right back corner of the truck bed. The impact had a good chance of sending them into a spin or causing the truck to roll.

“Hold on!” he shouted, trying to warn Carrie.

He’d no sooner gotten the words out than the smaller truck hit his dually full force. Thad felt the right back wheels lift off the pavement, the momentum sending the vehicle into a deadly roll. With no way to stop what was happening, he instinctively reached out for Carrie. Finding her hand, he held on as their shoulder harnesses held them in place while the truck continued to turn over and over.
