Chapter Twenty: Faith

As Faith approached the hospital, she didn’t feel particularly confident. It had taken her longer than she’d anticipated to find her way here, since she’d had to deactivate the location function on her wristclip. A bit of a tech-whiz, Diane had shown her how to do it, accessing a hidden menu with a password she had discovered by hacking into one of the professor’s personal vaults. Faith found herself in awe of the older girl’s rebellious actions.

Diane had also sketched a map, as promised, but the building was a lot larger than the medical centre, and she didn’t know it well. Parts of it were open twenty-four hours, which meant the doors would be unlocked, but also that there would be medical staff on duty who could easily spot her.

They had waited several days to carry out their plan. Sophia had insisted on making sure they chose a night where they knew a large number of teachers were off duty. Somehow, she had managed to access the teacher’s schedules so they could check the staff rotation. It meant Faith’s absence was far more likely to go unnoticed and was the first time she’d ever known her friend to break the rules. Still, she’d felt on edge all day.

She headed for the Emergency Medicine department, as Diane had directed. There, at least, she could pass herself off as a patient if she had to. As the glow of the entrance lights appeared, Faith cursed. Diane had labelled a side door but warned her the best time to enter would probably be whilst the main entrance was busy and the technicians were tied up with patients. Right now, it was deserted.

Faith skirted around the side of the building, locating the door without a problem. Peering inside, Diane was right. The hallway it led into was fairly busy, even this late into the night, and she would have to time her entrance so she wasn’t seen. Heading back the way she’d come, she crouched on the ground behind a wall, where she had a good view of both the main entrance and the side door, and waited.

She had two objectives. Firstly, finding a datadev where she could access Serene’s records. To do this without being noticed, she needed to find an empty office, away from the areas of the hospital which were busier at night. Her second aim was to locate a stock of femgazipane so she could read more about its effects. For this, she would need access to a medical storage room or treatment room. Before she could do anything, she had to get her hands on a staff ID card which would allow her to move around the building. Since staff kept these on their person at all times, this would probably be the most challenging of all.

Faith was beginning to wonder how long she’d have to stay hidden, when a medi-pod screamed into the bay outside the emergency entrance. Inside the building, a loud speaker announced the emergency, and several technicians flooded towards the medi-pod.
