The basic punching action of the siu nim tao which begins with (Fig. 8) vertical punch, and progresses through (Fig. 9) ding sao, (Fig. 10) jut sao, (Fig. 11) hok sao, (Fig. 12) tok sao, (Fig. 13) huen sao, (Fig. 14-15) taat sao to biu sao (performed 3 times), and (Fig. 16) huen sao, before (Fig. 17) the fist is held and withdrawn.

Chum kiu (scanning structure) is the intermediate form of Wing Chun and trains the practitioner to scan for the opponents weak points. The scanning structure form works on the principle of curvilinear, rotational, and spiraling forces to attack the opponent’s root structure (Figs. 18–31).

Biu jee (dart point), the third form of Wing Chun, is the paradoxical form. The dart point form uses the short to train the long. Important biomechanical articulations of the musculoskeletal structure are specially emphasized.

Fa kuen (variegated fist) contains elements of Jee Shim-type Wing Chun and is used to train the Wing Chun neophyte to move continuously from one movement to the next. The variegated fist form emphasizes the physical articulation of the eight characters formula of which the first four characters are tao (spit), tun (swallow), fao (rise), and chum (sink) (Figs. 32–41).

Sui da (random striking) contains techniques similar to Bak Mei kuen (White Eyebrows boxing). Bak Mei was one of the five elders and we speculate that this form may be an indication that Bak Mei also had a hand in the development of Wing Chun, alongside Ng Mui and Jee Shim. The random striking form concentrates on the use of mass transference as a means to cultivate linear, circular, lateral, and wrapping forces in addition to “leaking” (e.g., sneaking in punches). According to Master Liu, the essence of Wing Chun combat techniques lie in this form (Figs. 42, 43).
