Selectivity versus Needs

Schools express needs for teachers, and colleges struggle to meet the needs of the local schools. Students are admitted to credential programs in large numbers to offset the staffing needs of America’s public schools. One must question whether any profession could maintain excellence, given the tremendous need for teachers, amidst the dwindling supply. There is an unpopular admission to be made about teaching.

Teaching is not a profession. It is a true blue-collar assembly line focusing on social issues, warm bodies, and a salary schedule. Anyone seeking to shine in the classroom might be making the same salary as a ten-year veteran who spends more time on a cell phone than teaching. Is it any wonder the nation is losing wonderfully talented teachers, with so much left to share with students?
