She led the way up the footpath to the very corner of the island, a flat area where a lighthouse had once stood, then south along the ridge past a series of tiny coves. One was more of a rocky inlet, with sailing dinghies already pulled up on the beach ready to take people out at the weekend.

‘I can sail,’ he said, puffing a little up the steep part of the path. ‘I did a course when I was at school.’

‘They have canoes as well,’ she said, pointing at the sailing school shed. ‘But we’re going to the next cove.’ The wind whipped her long hair around her face as she stopped at the top of the steps. ‘This is better for swimming, but don’t go out deep. The currents curl around the coast with the tide and I don’t want to have to rescue you.’

‘I might like that,’ he said, grinning and taking the steps two at a time.

‘Or we would both drown and your career would be over before it starts,’ she said. ‘What a tragedy that would be.’

He snorted with laughter, his eyes sparkling. ‘They’d get some other reasonably tall, reasonably good-looking actor to fill my riding boots in a heartbeat.’

She laughed as her feet hit the sand. ‘He wouldn’t fit the costumes and he definitely wouldn’t have spent two months in the gym,’ she said, walking to the side of the steps to find a level bit of dry sand. ‘How about we just get you back in one piece instead?’

‘What’s that?’ he said, standing over her, looking left to the end of the cove to a shelter made of stone.

‘Oh. That’s the hermit house,’ she said. ‘This old guy built it and lived here until he died. A bit of a recluse. They did an article on him last year. He was a decorated war hero.’

‘There’s a good story, if someone wanted to make a film.’ He was already slipping out of his shoes and jeans, brightly coloured swimming trunks underneath.

Libby had to resort to undressing under a towel and dancing her swimsuit up to her waist.

‘Good moves,’ he said, shucking his T-shirt.

‘Shut up,’ she said, as she took in his youthful body. He was very nice to look at, she had to admit. He headed for the edge of the water, and while he tiptoed in and out of the freezing waves, she managed to pull up her one-piece swimsuit. She hadn’t expected to be trying to impress anyone – it was the costume she’d had since high school. She squinted down the top. Yep. Still had all her swimming and lifesaving badges on it.

‘It’s like ice,’ he said, still only up to his ankles, teeth chattering. ‘This is a terrible idea. Why didn’t you say it was a terrible idea?’

‘I did,’ she said, set her teeth and ploughed in. ‘It’s OK once you get past your…’ Her thighs stung as the water crawled up, hit her swimsuit, made her squeal. By the time she was up to her waist, she could splash her arms and chest, shaking with cold.
