6 Hanging Lake Trail

Hanging Lake Welcome Center: 110 Wulfsohn Road, Glenwood Springs; 970-384-6309 visitglenwood.com/hanginglake

Prepare to be awed by these views. Hanging Lake is an extremely fragile, surreal, bright-blue lake filled by Bridal Veil Falls. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 2011, it’s a natural wonder, seemingly suspended off the edge of a cliff and formed by rare deposits of dissolved carbonates. Because of the delicate ecosystem, don’t touch the water, try to walk across the logs, or attempt ridiculous selfies that could introduce unnatural elements. Get to this famous destination via the Hanging Lake Trail, a pretty, short trail about 10 miles from Glenwood Springs (a shuttle takes you to the trailhead from Hanging Lake Welcome Center). The trail spans only about 2.5 miles round-trip, but it is steep and rocky. Plan plenty of time to make it up safely and then enjoy the views at the top. Once there, keep going to Spouting Rock for bonus views. This moderate trail has no phone service and can be crowded in the summer, so leave before 8 a.m. and pack water, snacks, and emergency supplies. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
