Chapter 7

Ellene's offer to NewEarth went as well as Selina could've predicted. Out of 3000 people, 1700 agreed to the trip to Yassel. What remained after the vote was the dividing of essentials and preparing for departure.

The NewEarth council gathered in the admin room of the warehouse to review the next step in the transport to planet Yassel. The growing pomp of their body was quickly reduced to partially slipshod chairs huddled around a rusted-out table.

Zed began, "The transport the UA is sending, Evangeline, has enough space if anyone changes their minds about coming along. I know this is sudden; believe me, I wish there was more time to investigate alternatives."

Selina caught Ryan's cocky grin. In the division among those leaving and staying, Ryan was elevated to leader of NewEarth. Selina couldn't have been leaving the colony soon enough after that.

"Something on your mind there, Ryan?" Asked Zed.

Ryan cast an annoyed look at Zed and Selina as he stood. "A few things. We've busted our asses developing sustenance for NewEarth, not to mention getting on the good graces of - I don't know - the only group of aliens in this galaxy so far who haven't minded us breathing their air. Now, we're being penalized into giving up crops because some of us naively think the UA will save us?"

Selina grasped the handle of her pulse pistol and squeezed it tight.

Ryan continued his sermon. "Sorry, I don't see why we should jump on board with the UA just because they claim their location is more secure. Besides, isn't planet Yassel under attack by the Omegans now? I know that’s true, even with the spotty connection to Network that we have."

Selina said, "Safer is better than nothing. Excuse me if I don't trust this building that was probably here way before we set foot on this planet. You wanna stay, bone up on your Mardak and blend into Tas Ralong? That's on you. But you've got a week to make up your mind."

Ryan narrowed his eyes. "I'll have you all know I'm telling anyone that'll listen why they should stay too, including those who voted for a ride on your little transport. So have fun with your new captors."

Ryan slid his chair back, making a loud screech. Zed reached for him as he left, but it was useless. "Selina, get a head count of people and let's start organizing. I don't want to hold this over any more than we have to. It's a helluva long way to Yassel."
