Clementine with Winston (wearing air commodore uniform) leaving 10 Downing Street in February 1940, three months before he became Prime Minister.

Frequently seen smiling alongside her husband, Clementine became the human face of Winston’s government and made sure her well-groomed and stylish appearance (in the midst of the Blitz) expressed a confidence in victory at all times. In the absence of hot water due to bomb damage in Downing Street, she washed her hair, to her family’s alarm, with neat benzene to give it shine. Her wardrobe was also carefully chosen to send out subliminal messages of defiance through strong colours – one favourite was a coral red – and bold eye-catching styles. Like the Queen, she continued to believe she should dress up to meet the people, just as they would do for her, and that a touch of glamour was welcome amid the shabbiness of war.
