Gus leaned over and wiped the sweat from his forehead. The sun beat down on the battlefield as he faced off against the enemy. There were two of them, shirtless, wearing aviator sunglasses. They breathed heavily as they considered their options. Kenny Loggins’s “Playing with the Boys” blasted from speakers surrounding the half-dozen volleyball courts the resort had erected.

Ever since the Yank movie Top Gun had premiered the spring before, every vacation destination with a beach had begun to host volleyball games where people could feel like they were Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer.

Today was the beach day of Gus’s vacation, and Andy had insisted they conquer the court. They’d taken control of the playing field in the early morning and hadn’t met with a worthy challenger yet.

“I’d say it was the right time / to walk away.” The song was on a loop and started again.

Gus pushed it from his mind and focused on the ball. The man in the back tossed it up and smacked it across. The shot was pretty good for a norm, but Andy easily caught it with the undersides of her forearms and passed it up to a position near the net.

Gus jumped, his vertical taking him well above the net, and considered whether or not to spike it. Both opponents were maneuvering to prevent him from getting the point, so instead, he tapped the ball over to his right. Andy was right there, jumping up and spiking it into the undefended halfback corner.

“Yeah,” she cheered as they high-fived and got the ball back. No one got the point, but a service change was going to win them the game.

This game was closer than the others—twenty to seventeen. Their opponents, a pair of Confed sailors on leave, were practiced volleyball players who had easily risen past the day’s other opponents. Judging by their faces, they were more than a little surprised to be down to a pair of amateurs, however.

“Do it, Gussy. You have to,” Andy pleaded as he took the ball back to serve.

“Come on,” he moaned.

“You promised you’d do it.” She turned to the small crowd observing the match. “You want him to do it, right?” The crowd, mostly women, all of whom had a drink in their hand, cheered Gus on. “Give the people what they want!” She turned back to him with a maniacal grin.

“You’re evil,” Gus sighed, but did what she wanted.

“Playing, playing with the boys / staying, staying with the boys!” roared over the speakers as Gus executed the pose Slider had used in the movie.

There was one crucial difference, though: Gus was much more muscular than the actor. His muscles bulged and hardened as he hit the pose, turning into the well-defined tools he’d sculpted and used in combat these last few years. None of the women in the crowd knew this, of course, but neither did they care. Screams of delight and catcalls reached out to him.

“There’s a good sport.” Andy pumped up the crowd by slapping him on the ass.
