Chapter 20

Kadee had an awful night. A nightmare would have been a welcome reprieve, like a vacation on some far-off beach. Instead, she lay fully awake. She tossed and turned, her mind consumed with a waking reality that was worse than even the most horrifying nightmare she could conjure.

Alex left for the gym. He had asked Kadee if she was OK.

Of course, she wasn’t, but she had responded: “I’ll be fine, Al.”

What could she say? He thought she was reeling over May’s suicide, which ostensibly she was. May killing herself would have been absolutely devastating. But Kadee had far more to deal with. Kadee had to deal with knowing Yvonne was a murderess, and most likely had just killed a second person. That she knew of! Based on her knowledge of forensic psychology, she believed that this meant Yvonne would likely continue killing. The kills would become easier for her. And Kadee was most likely a target, perhaps her next potential victim. Kadee was in danger and did not know what to do.

She checked for the knife under the mattress again. It was there. But feeling the edge of the blade provided no comfort. She had no idea what Yvonne was up to. Not knowing left her feeling like she possessed no control over the circumstances. She hated that. She hated not knowing things. But this… this was beyond any sort of previous torment of not knowing. This was beyond the mind games she immersed herself in while exploring the criminal cases. That research was to enlighten herself, to learn to look between the lines to discover some truth. No. This was not a situation to be dissected; this was a situation where she needed to take action.

But what action? That was the question that had kept her up all night. That was the question that hung in the air like a rock climber hanging from a finger pocket: one slip of the grip and the consequences were fatal.

She got up and checked her Facebook. Yvonne had not responded to her invitation yet.

She was so distracted that when she made coffee, she forgot to put the filter in. Brown, grainy liquid poured down the sides of the coffee pot. Jesus Christ! Get a grip, Kadee!

She cleaned the mess, wiped the counter, grunted under her breath, and dumped the saturated paper towels in the garbage. She made another pot. And called Vanessa. Thankfully, she had told Vanessa about Yvonne; now, she would share her theory about May to see what Vanessa thought.

Vanessa picked up, her voice groggy. “Hey. Everything OK? How are you holding up?”

“Ness. Listen… um… OK. This is going to sound nuts, but I think Yvonne killed May.”

“Whaaat?”

“I think Yvonne killed May. In fact, I’m sure of it. I don’t think May would kill herself.”

“We talked about this last night. You didn’t know her that well. And… people don’t always show signs of being suicidal. You know this.”

“But I also know she didn’t kill herself. Yvonne did it. It’s the only thing that makes sense.
