Night-for-Day Interiors

Sometimes you have to keep shooting a day interior scene into the night. If you plan ahead for this, it may be possible to shoot all angles looking at the windows before the sun goes down. If that’s not possible, you should plan on lighting the windows in such a way that it looks as if the sun is still up. One technique is to simply “white out” the view by covering the window with tracing paper and backlighting it, or by putting a big frame of white material outside and lighting that up. This can look a little unreal unless you break up the whiteness by covering the window with curtain sheers, lace, or venetian blinds. It also helps not to stage your action too close to the windows, or do those angles while there is still sunlight.
