CORTLAND
ZONES: 3–4
RIPENS: 125–130 days after full bloom
PARENTS: Ben Davis x McIntosh
CIDER CLASS: Medium acid, sweet
Frequently considered to be an “old” apple, Cortland is one of the early “new” varieties, created at the New York State Experiment Station in 1898. Medium in size and vigor, the Cortland is an annual bearer and continues to be a popular commercial orchard variety. It is a good pollinator for other varieties.
Cortland apples are dark red with a dusky, blue cast; they are oblate in shape and of medium size. The fine-grained flesh is very juicy, tender, and white. One of its good features for cidermaking is the long time it takes to discolor at grinding time. A Cortland cider tends to be light colored, and its mildness makes it an excellent blending base. The juice is slightly pink.
