A Ride in the Skies

“Milady, our King has ordered for you to ride with me. Here you go,” Rhey said as he pulled me onto Swift.

“But what about the others?” I sputtered.

I couldn’t believe what had just come out of my mouth! Since when did I care about the others? Usually, I was more worried about making myself invisible than caring about others. I looked around to make sure everyone had a mode of travel. The family with the baby was in a horse-drawn wagon. Raven sat proudly on top of a beautiful chestnut mare. Prince Trueheart, unbelievably, sat astride a unicorn. A unicorn? What was next? Spaceships? I laughed to myself. Nah, that would be silly.

The lion roared again, shaking the ground and vibrating through me. What an awesome sound! I could not get over it. Strength flowed through me with every roar, making me stronger than ever before.

“Are you ready, Mistress?” Rhey asked. Before I could even nod a quick yes, he continued, “Hold on!” And with that, we were off.

At the beginning of the path, Swift trotted confidently, but then wonders beyond wonders—wings appeared out of Swift’s sides. Before I could figure out what was happening, Swift began galloping at a breakneck pace. Moments later, Swift flapped his magnificent wings, and we lifted off the ground. Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! I couldn’t believe my eyes. How was it possible? Where was he hiding those wings?

Once in the air, I looked around. Why were we the only ones flying while everyone else was walking or riding? I gulped the air as we flew higher and higher toward the sun. Rhey circled above the group, each loop growing wider and wider. His eyes narrowed as he focused intently on the ground below. Was he figuring out which path to take? No, he was looking for something with his intent stare. It hit me! The enemy! He was looking far and wide for the enemy!

“Hold on, Alli,” he yelled back to me as Swift dove toward the ground. Whoa! This was much better than any kiddie ride at the fair. I tightened my grip on Rhey’s waist and held on for dear life. We were going so fast. How on earth were we going to land? Please don’t crash, I prayed. Abruptly, Swift slowed way down and hovered, like a helicopter, over the ground. Gracefully, gently, he glided down. We landed safely with a bump and a little step. I let out a big sigh of relief. Whew!

Swift trotted directly over to Prince Trueheart. Rhey gave his report of all he saw. I focused on his voice, trying to calm my racing and pounding heart. “All is clear for the next thirty miles. The Dark Forest shows no enemy activity.” Well, that was good to hear. The men continued talking for a few minutes before Rhey turned his attention back to me, “If you’re okay, Mistress, we will continue.”

“Umm, sure,” I replied, subdued by the ride.
