CHAPTER NINETEEN

The part of the building Thaymire and I venture into should, by rights, be over the river. I don’t know if we’re in a pocket dimension or something else and I don’t particularly want to speculate. Thinking about it makes my head hurt.

Better to focus on what I know. Get innocent person back, make sure bad person doesn’t get to do bad things again. The exact rules might be different, but the game is the same. That’s how we do things at the SPVM.

Oh, fuck. I stop dead.

Thaymire looks at me in question and swivels his attention, taking in our surroundings. He probably thinks I heard or saw something.

No. I realized I forgot to update Rene on where I’m going, and this is likely way outside the scope of what I’m supposed to be involved in. Oops.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission, right?

I’m already in this, Lynette’s life is in the balance, and the best chance for getting Seelie wars off our streets will be to resolve their problem and send them back to their realm. I shake my head at Thaymire and keep walking. We’re both trying to be as stealthy as we can. My shoes are good for this sort of thing, and Thaymire’s…

I’m not sure he’s wearing shoes. A glance gives that impression, but the more I look, the less shoe-y the whole business looks.

Ew.

Even with these thoughts racing through my mind, I’m the one who sees the block of stone. It teeters above us through a crack in the rebar and concrete. Then it plummets at Thaymire’s head.

There isn’t time to shout a warning. I release my power so quickly it comes out of me with a full-throated yell. I’d worry about our lost stealth if I weren’t suddenly yanking with every ounce of muscle I possess.

My flame whip coils around the falling block and—

It swings to the side and down onto the floor with a thud. I stagger sideways. I’m pretty sure I pulled a muscle. Who am I kidding? I think I pulled my entire body. Can a woman sprain her ovaries?

Hopefully, my fae genetics will make up for that.

I straighten, dismiss the fire whip, and raise an eyebrow at Thaymire. “I’m not sure your fancy royal shield would work if you were splattered all over the floor. You’re not as indestructible as you might think.”

His mouth twitches in amusement, and he inclines his head to me in a pseudo-bow. His lack of thanks only makes me more intrigued about the possibility of Seelie bargains.

Someone could have pushed the block of stone, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone above. I send a fireball up through the gap at high speed. There aren’t any shrieks or expletives, so Thaymire and I shrug at each other and keep going.

The part of the building that’s real—at least in the human world—was mostly an open warehouse area to store cargo from the ships coming along the river. This space seems like someone took the first area and had an AI generate a floor plan.
