Merry waited and waited, but Clay never returned. Her feet grew tired from dancing with some of the clumsy young men who stepped on her toes more than once. She plopped down in a chair and fanned her face.

Laura joined her. “Whew. I’m worn out. It’s been fun, but I’m about ready for a rest.”

“That’s why I’m sitting this one out too.” Although if Clay were here and wanted to dance, she’d find the energy for it.

Laura glanced around the room. “Where is Clay? I haven’t seen him for a while.” She giggled. “I’m so glad he won your basket. I thought sure that strange man would outbid Clay, but he finally stopped and let Clay have it.”

“I thought the same and was so surprised by the amount Clay paid for it. I don’t know where he is now. He said he had an errand to run and left a little before nine.” Merry looked toward the door once more in hopes he’d walk through, but only a few people leaving with young children came into view. “It’s almost ten now and time to leave.” Papa had already left, expecting Clay to escort her home.

Laura yawned and covered her mouth. “Sorry about that. I guess I’m more tired than I realized. I for one will be glad to get home and get these shoes off.”

“I will too. Tomorrow morning will come too quickly, and Papa says if we can be out and about on Saturday night, then we can be in the Lord’s house on Sunday morning.” Since Clay hadn’t returned, she had no good reason to remain here. If she left now, she could be back at Holly Hill with a twenty-five-minute brisk walk.

“I think I’ll call it a night, Laura. It’s time to head on home.”

“But you can’t walk all that way alone. It’s late, and you need someone to go with you.”

“I’ll be fine. I’ve been up that hill more times than I can count.” Still, it would be rather dark. If only Clay had stayed around, he could walk her home. She didn’t want to bother anyone else with making the trip.

“No, you stay right here. I’m going to get my brother. He’ll take you in the carriage with him and Betsy. You’re just a little ways beyond them.” Laura jumped up to find her brother.

Merry had no intention of waiting around for Edward and Betsy Wilson and disrupt their evening. She retrieved her shawl and hurried out into the night. At the top step of the town hall, she paused. A figure darted out from the alleyway and headed her way. It looked like Clay. She stepped back into the shadows as he raced by and headed off into the night.

Her heart sank to her toes. He’d left her at the dance just like he’d done all those years ago. He’d been so nice and friendly most of the evening, but he must have gotten cold feet. Merry pulled her shawl tighter and straightened her shoulders.
