Art therapy

The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) describes art therapy as a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication, with a three-way relationship between the child, the therapist and the image or artefact. A trained art therapist will usually have a first degree in art, some experience of working in an area of health, education or social care, and a masters degree completed over two years, full time, or three years, part time. In order to work as an art therapist in the NHS and social services, it is mandatory to possess the post-graduate MA/MSc in art therapy or art psychotherapy. They should be a member of the BAAT, which is the professional organization of art therapists in the UK and has its own code of ethics of professional practice. It maintains a comprehensive directory of qualified art therapists in the UK. Art therapists are regulated by the Health Professions Council (HPC).

There are also art therapy assistants and assistant practitioners, who work with registered art therapists, usually with a group of clients, or, perhaps, alongside the qualified therapist or on their own. No academic qualifications are needed, and it will be important to be reassured that a qualified art therapist is involved in the supervision of the work of these assistants. Art therapy is especially beneficial for emotional and psychological disorders, as it provides a means of communication to express feelings that are too difficult to verbalize.
