Gw25-299.1

‘But what does it mean?’ Lyra asked, leaning forward and taking the index card from Caitlin.

‘It means that something was removed. Redacted from their record.’

‘GW25-299.1,’ she read out aloud. ‘And it’s definitely not on the later version.’

Caitlin shook her head, ‘No. I checked, twice. That’s an identifier for some kind of record, but I don’t recognise the system. It’s either something Zillers dreamt up himself or —’ She froze mid-sentence.

‘Or what?’

‘Or is from an older collection, pre-Mayerstein.’

‘You’re losing me.’

Caitlin took the card back and looked at the file references. ‘Do you see how these all start with a prefix of three letters then a dash? That’s Mayerstein’s classification category: “SCI” is science, “BIO” for Biology, and so on.’

‘Okay. And GW25 is an older way of doing it. So don’t we just go back to the system before?’

Caitlin sighed. ‘Trouble is, there wasn’t just one. Before Mayerstein there were five different systems; it wasn’t a great time in the Scriptorium. Fights used to break out in the stacks between rival indexers.’

Lyra laughed. ‘Sorry, but I can’t imagine what a fight between two librarians would look like. Did they hit each other with bookmarks?’

Caitlin ignored her friend and studied the numbers, racking her brain to think what it could be.

‘Don’t you think it would be easier to ask the Draconians?’

‘Why?’

‘Well, you said they took away hundreds of documents. Maybe the thing you’re looking for is in there. Your godfather is a senior member of the guild after all.’

‘But the creature marked Zillers as the forger, and no Draconians have been killed, have they?’

‘Not that we know of.’

‘I need to find someone who knows about the old indexes.’

‘Master Dorrowkind?’

Caitlin grimaced. ‘Not if I can avoid it. I think between Rufius and Sabien he may feel less inclined towards helping me.’

Lyra smirked. ‘I’m not sure who I’d be more scared of.’

‘Yeah,’ Caitlin said, and smiled. ‘I think Dorrowkind nearly wet himself when I showed up with the Protectorate.’
