ACT 28
A s Nicholas walked away from the Economy to go check on the Winnebago, he and Charlie heard a thunderous crash resound between the buildings. They took off running toward the street, and as they got to the sidewalk, they saw a massive wall of dust and debris flying toward them. It looked as if a bomb had exploded. People across the street were screaming and scattering to the west. Nicholas and Charlie slowed down to a walk, figuring it was too late for the crew of the Winnebago.
âDammit!â Nicholas said as he stopped.
Suddenly, the horses ran through the cloud, pulling the Winnebago and its entire crew.
â½â½â½
âWhat the hell was that?â I said.
Wayne got up, walked over to the front door, and opened it, then quickly shut it. âThe front of the building came down, and the doors completely blocked with smoldering bricks and wood.â
âWhat happened?â Joe said.
âWeâre trapped. Thatâs what happened! The whole fucking front of the building came down. If weâd have left when I said, weâd be outside right now.â
âIf we would have left when you said, weâd be buried under 500 tons of brick!â Joe said.
I was about ready to give up with trying to save Mr. Bellows. Maybe it was time to get out; no sense in us all dying. âLet me try one more time.â
As I bent down and gave Bellows one last breath, I checked his pulse. Shit! His rapid pulse was almost impalpable; my first thought was a ventricular tachycardia.
âDonât die on me!â I said as I raised my fist in the air and hit him as hard as I could in the chest. Mr. Bellows lurched up and gasped for air, then he coughed.
âWhat the fuck?â Wayne asked as he looked at Joe.
Bellows looked confused as he tried to process where he was. Joe and Wayne stared at me in shock. Wayne got up and went over to the warehouse door and slowly opened it. The smoke poured through the opening. Wayne stooped down and went into the warehouse and shut the door behind him. When I saw how thick the smoke had gotten, my first thought was that we were all gonna die.
âDonât worry. Weâll get out of here,â Joe said. âWe do this all the time. Wayneâs good at his job. If thereâs a way out, heâll find it.â
I donât know if he was just saying that to make me feel better, but from what I remember, I donât think it worked. Then the door opened, and Wayne rushed back in, a cloud of smoke following him.
âMr. Bellows, can you walk?â Wayne asked.
âI think so.â
âGood. I need you guys to help Mr. Bellows. We need to get him through the warehouse. Our only hope is the loading docks!â
We all looked up, as we heard another noise above us. That one sounded like wood bending, and then it snapped. Thatâs when water poured into the office. Wayne looked at us. He was concerned and spoke slowly. âListen. We need to keep our wits about us and hurry.
