Chapter 14

Mayla's brain should have exploded with questions, but strangely her mind was empty. For the first time in about twenty-four hours, she didn't have a thousand questions plaguing her.

She looked up, overwhelmed. She saw all these strange faces in the strange cold room and felt a sudden pressure that took her breath away. Searching for a sense of stability, she glanced around. She found it in a pair of green eyes that stared at her steadily. The color calmed her violent heartbeat and gave her something to focus on. She blinked several times until she realized they were Tom's eyes. At that moment, the sounds of her surroundings pierced her consciousness.

"Emma and Markus had a child?" she heard one of the witches ask.

"She's supposed to be Melinda's heir?"

"Why didn't anyone tell us?"

"Did you know, Artus?"

Mayla looked at the old man and watched his expression. He peered at her with just as much surprise as the others and shook his head slowly. She glanced around and read confusion, astonishment, and... suspicion in their expressions? Anna drew her sweeping brows so tightly together that they almost merged into a single line. What did this woman have against her?

Her eyes wandered and settled on Tom. He didn't look surprised at all. "Did you know? I mean..." her voice broke and she cleared her throat, "...who I am?"

He smiled. It was the first time she'd seen him smile. It suited him. Then he shook his head gently and a few strands of his dark hair fell across his forehead. A slight shadow crossed his eyes. What did that mean? "I figured Melinda and you were connected because your powers awakened when she disappeared. But, I had no clue she was your grandmother."

"And yet you came to my rescue? Three times?"

Without saying anything, he nodded.

"If she is Melinda's granddaughter, there is still hope!" one of the wizards whose name she could not remember shouted.

Artus von Donnersberg slapped the table with the flat of his hand. "Mayla is a member of the fire founding family, Alessia and her children Francesco and Gabrielle are also still alive and they are members of the water founding family, and there must be someone from the air founding family somewhere or the stone wouldn't still be glowing."

"What about the Earth Circle?" Mayla asked, finding her voice again.

"The Earth Circle founding family was wiped out," Tom explained. "Before your parents, Emma and Markus, were murdered, Vincent von Eisenfels, that infamous wizard, committed other murders. He killed the de Rochats, the founding family of the Earth Circle, and almost all the members of the Montgomery family, the founding family of the Air Circle. And we all believed he had also sealed the future of the von Flammensteins. Melinda didn't confide in anyone."

"Why didn't she tell us?" Violett asked, glaring accusingly at Mayla as if she had something to do with it. Mayla immediately guessed why. Her grandmother feared traitors. Traitors in the ranks of the opposition.

"What's more important is that we know now.
