Chapter Fourteen

Mayla was not able to rush to Georg's aid as quickly as she had hoped. She would have preferred to start that evening after learning of his arrest. Tom, however, was not yet fit enough and they lacked information.

"Tell us everything you know about his arrest and the place where he’s being kept prisoner!" she’d urged Artus von Donnersberg. He and Angelika thoroughly relayed the information they had received from their police informant.

They had arranged to meet two days later in the afternoon. By then, von Donnersberg would have found out how big the hidden world-fold in southern England was and Tom and Mayla would make a plan to break Georg out of prison.

After dinner, Tom and Mayla jumped back to the log cabin in the Pyrenees. After greeting Kitty, along with Karl and his little sister, they went outside. The temperatures were mild. Under Tom's guidance, Mayla conjured up two sofas on the lawn, on which they made themselves comfortable under the stars. The sun had set some time before behind the high rocky peak in the west, and only a pale glimmer of light stretched along the horizon. Above them, thousands of stars twinkled, but Mayla was oblivious of them. "I wish we could set him free right now."

Tom suppressed a grumble, though it was written all over his face. He silently drank a cup of healing potion that would speed up his recovery, glancing at her repeatedly. Between them was a small side table on which Mayla kept a box of chocolates. Out of sheer excitement, she ate almost the entire box. When she noticed, she hesitated and with great effort put the last piece of dark chocolate back in the box. "This one's for you."

Tom chuckled softly. "Uh, go ahead and eat it. Tomorrow, we'll jump to Ulmen City to buy more."

She beamed at him enthusiastically. "That's a fantastic idea." This caring side of him was new but fabulous. Solemnly, she took the chocolate and smelled it. She thought about Georg as the scent of chocolate caressed her senses. "When will we free Georg?"

"You'll have to be patient for a couple more days."

"A couple more days? Who knows what they will do to him in the meantime!"

"We’ll contact Tauber tomorrow."

"The detective?"

"That's right. He's going to scout out the police station where Georg worked."

"Can't we see him tonight...?"

"He's busy tonight."

"All right. So Tauber will scout the station. Does it even have a jail?"

"Only a holding cell. Regular prisons are in their own, specially-created world-folds. But, according to Artus, Georg isn’t being held in any of those official detention centers."

A chilly wind blew. Shivering, she hunched her shoulders and pulled in her legs. Tom pulled his wand from under his leather jacket and with a flick of his wrist, a cozy blanket landed on her, and she pulled it up under her chin. Comfortable now, she stretched her legs out again.

"Thanks. Do you have any idea where they might have taken Georg instead of an official prison?"

"According to Artus, at first, to the police station.
