But then, something intensely peculiar occurred: Peter invited Poniatowski to visit him. He behaved in a friendly manner towards his wife’s lover and invited him to have dinner with himself and his mistress, Elizabeth Vorontsova. After they had settled in around the table, and were making agreeable conversation, Peter abruptly declared that someone was missing from the party. He dashed off to Catherine’s room, scarcely giving her time to put on a robe over her night gown, and brought her in to be seated with the others. Neither Poniatowski nor Catherine knew what to make of this. Peter appeared to be enjoying himself immensely, as if satisfied that he had managed to discomfit his superior wife for once. Catherine, however, found the whole affair distasteful. Poniatowski left for Poland within a few days; it was the end of his affair with Catherine, but not the end of their friendship. Years later, when Poniatowski had been named king in Poland due to Catherine’s influence, he set down his impressions of Peter, by then long dead:
